When someone asks me what a doula is or what they do, I tell them its like hiring a friend who knows the ropes of what you’re about to go through. Webster’s dictionary says that a doula is: “a person trained to provide advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth.” Though not a medical professional, having a doula can make a big difference in your birth. Some studies have even shown that having a doula as part of you birth team decreases the overall cesarean rate by 50%, the length of labor by 25%, the use of oxytocin by 40%, and request for an epidural by 60%.
“I envision a peaceful birth”
From counter pressure during contracts, words of encouragement when you feel like there’s no end in sight, doing your hair, helping you feel confident about your choices in birth, to anything in between, I as a labor doula will be there with you no matter what you need. Besides knowing how to help you in labor, doulas are also well known for being advocators. As I am hired by you, no one else, I am on your side and can help make sure that what you want is what you get if at all possible.
